Building a Better Community

1990-Today

Under the leadership of Cynthia Smith, a former educator, Universal strengthened its focus on educational construction while continuing to serve municipalities, counties, financial institutions, and community organizations throughout Kansas and Missouri. Today, fifth-generation CEO Archie Smith V and multiple members of the Smith family remain actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the company, continuing a legacy that spans more than a century.

Over the last fifteen years, Universal has averaged approximately one new elementary school each year while expanding its portfolio across K-12 education, justice, municipal, financial, and community-focused projects. Having served more than 46 school districts, 12 counties, and numerous churches, municipalities, and financial institutions, Universal continues to fulfill its mission of Building a Better Community.
