Johnson County Community Support Services Breakroom Remodel

DESCRIPTION:Universal Construction completed the renovation of an existing breakroom within Johnson County Community Support Services' occupied facility in Shawnee. The project transformed approximately 488 SF into an updated staff space through selective demolition, new construction, casework, finishes, doors and glazing, and associated mechanical, plumbing, and electrical improvements.
Working within an active facility required careful coordination to complete the renovation while protecting surrounding spaces and minimizing disruption to ongoing operations. The completed breakroom provides Johnson County CSS staff with a refreshed, functional space designed to better support their day-to-day needs

Jackson County Parks + Rec – Lake Jacomo Shelter #9 Playground
LOCATION: Blue Springs, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: The Lake Jacomo Shelter #9 Playground project included site improvements and installation of new playground equipment to enhance the recreational amenities surrounding Shelter #9. Universal Construction completed site clearing and preparation, cast-in-place concrete for playground areas and walkways, installation of new play equipment, and associated landscape restoration. The completed improvements provide a safe, accessible, and engaging recreation space for families and visitors while integrating the new playground and pedestrian areas into the surrounding Lake Jacomo park setting.

Johnson County Parks & Recreation District Administration & Park Police Renovation and Addition
LOCATION: Shawnee Mission, Kansas
DESCRIPTION:Universal Construction completed a $5.76 million renovation and addition to the Johnson County Parks & Recreation District Administration Building and Park Police Headquarters in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
The project transformed the existing facility to better support both administrative staff and Park Police operations. Improvements included finishing lower-level space, creating new meeting and collaboration areas and a centralized staff breakroom, renovating the administrative lobby and restrooms, and updating interior spaces with new finishes and additional natural light. A dedicated Park Police addition provided expanded locker and support spaces, with additional improvements extending to building systems, roofing, site features, and landscaping.
The completed project brings together refreshed workspaces, expanded operational areas, and modernized building systems to create a more functional and welcoming environment for the JCPRD and Park Police teams who serve the Johnson County community.

Clinton County Courthouse
LOCATION: Plattsburg, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: Clinton County needed exterior and interior improvements made to their courthouse. On the outside, we replaced their roof and windows, restored brick masonry, added new steel framing, drywall, and paint, and made improvements to the landscaping. Inside, we updated their secure entrance, lighting, and repainted.

Johnson County Theatre in the Park
LOCATION: Shawnee, KS
DESCRIPTION: The Theatre in the Park improvements included construction of two new outdoor restroom buildings designed to enhance accessibility and the visitor experience at the Johnson County performance venue. The project also included a new ADA-compliant parking lot and sidewalks, upgraded site lighting, landscaping, and associated site improvements.
Accessibility was a central focus of the project, with the new facilities incorporating distinctive building forms, tactile materials, integrated graphics, and dynamic lighting to improve visibility and wayfinding for visitors of all ages and abilities. The completed improvements provide a more welcoming and functional entrance to the park while supporting the venue’s transition from daytime activities to evening performances.
The project was recognized with an AIA design award for its approach to accessible public architecture.

Antioch Park Shelter

DESCRIPTION: A new retaining wall and stairs were constructed outside of the park's admin entry and a new ADA sidewalk, water fountain, and storage area were installed at Shelter 1.

Roeland Park Public Works Facility
LOCATION: Kansas City, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: The Roeland Park Public Works Facility project transformed an existing 64,000 SF assembly warehouse into a modern office, operations, and vehicle support facility. The renovation included new office and conference spaces, polished concrete flooring, new doors and windows, employee locker facilities, private restrooms with showers, laundry, a new kitchen, and associated interior improvements.
Warehouse renovations included a new wash bay, vehicle parking and work areas, a storage mezzanine, upgraded lighting, and a new trench drain to manage water and snow from the vehicle parking area. New bay doors at the east and west ends of the building created drive-through access and improved vehicle circulation. Exterior improvements included partial roof replacement, new vehicle approaches, entry stairs and an ADA-accessible ramp, railings, and landscaping.

Roeland Park Community Center
LOCATION: Roeland Park, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: Universal Construction partnered with the City of Roeland Park to complete improvements to the existing Community Center. Universal was initially brought in to complete outstanding punch-list items from another contractor following the Phase I renovations and was later selected to take over the Phase II renovations.
The work included major improvements throughout the facility, including a new CDC classroom, kitchen, fitness area, offices, updated flooring and finishes, casework, doors, restroom improvements, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades. The project also included exterior improvements to enhance the existing facility and surrounding site.

Bourbon County Jail
LOCATION: Fort Scott, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: The project is a 24,000 SF facility composed of 78 beds. The new facility includes a booking room, administration offices, medical office, laundry room, kitchen, and a
vehicle Sally Port, with a shelled space for future expansion of an additional 20 beds. The new cells installed were double occupancy prefabricated steel cells.

Bates County Jail and Admin Center
LOCATION: Butler, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: The first project which consists of a jail expansion that’s approximately 939 SF of renovation work that includes revamping a sally port into additional individual holding cells, relocation of security doors, renovation of existing venting system and addition of a new sally port onto the north side of the existing building. It will also include a 6,636 SF addition. This addition will be a separate building attached to the existing jail via a connection corridor to the
old indoor recreation area. The second project is the renovation of an existing building for additional administration space for the courthouse. This building is approximately 100 X 100 and includes all interior utilities associated with renovation and a partial renovation of the basement that will require some demolition.

Douglas County Jail
LOCATION: Lawrence, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: This three story, 113,706 SF 196 bed detention facility features: 56 bed dormitory style work release unit, 28 bed unit for women, 28 bed minimum security unit, 56 bed medium security unit, 28 bed maximum security unit, and 4 bed medical unit. Support facilities include laundry, kitchen, administration, booking, central plant and high security courtroom.

Historic Truman Courthouse
LOCATION: Independence, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: Universal Construction completed a comprehensive historic renovation of the Historic Truman Courthouse, a landmark originally constructed in 1836 and later renovated and rededicated by Presiding Judge Harry S. Truman in 1933. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the project required extensive modernization while carefully preserving the character and historic features of the nearly two-century-old courthouse.
The renovation encompassed the entire building, including the lower level, first and second floors, attic, and clock tower. Improvements included new HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical systems, and a passenger elevator, along with restoration of plaster walls and ceilings, historic millwork, marble wall panels, Battleship linoleum flooring, and historic light fixtures.
Construction presented unique challenges within the historic structure, including cutting through existing concrete floors and installing drilled piers in the lower level to support the new elevator. Limited access required excavated material to be removed by hand through basement windows. The renovation also incorporated viewing windows within select walls and ceilings to reveal historic 1887 architectural details that had been concealed during previous renovations.

Belton Community Center Aquatics Addition
LOCATION: Belton, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: Universal Construction served as Construction Manager for the Belton Community Center Aquatics Addition, a new two-story, 23,000 SF precast facility constructed as an addition to the existing community center. The expansion created a comprehensive aquatic and recreation destination featuring two pools, a lazy river, two two-story waterslides, a zero-entry pool with splash pad, a lap pool with starting blocks, and children’s themed aquatic features.
Construction also included renovations within the existing Community Center, including the men’s and women’s locker rooms, fitness facility, and gym. The project required careful coordination between the new addition and renovation work within the existing community facility, ultimately expanding the recreation and wellness amenities available to the Belton community.

Jackson County Courthouse Historic Restoration
LOCATION: Kansas City, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: Universal Construction completed historic restoration work at the Jackson County Courthouse, an Art Deco landmark originally completed in 1934. The project required careful preservation of the building’s historic character while maintaining daily courthouse operations throughout construction.
Phase I included restoration and complete tuckpointing of the exterior stonework, including decorative pink Indiana limestone, carved stonework and panels, stone grilles, and Mankato stone at the upper portions of the building. Approximately 120,000 linear feet of stone mortar joints were ground out and tuckpointed before a transparent sealer was applied to the restored exterior façade.
The project also included refinishing exterior ornamental grilles and restoration of 675 exterior windows, which were removed, reglazed, and reinstalled. Work was carefully phased and coordinated so Jackson County could continue operating within the occupied courthouse throughout the restoration.

Harrisonville Community Center
LOCATION: Harrisonville, Missouri
DESCRIPTION: Universal Construction served as Construction Manager for the new Harrisonville Community Center, a two-story precast facility constructed on an undeveloped site for the City of Harrisonville. The project created a comprehensive community recreation facility featuring a swimming pool and spray pad, gymnasium with wood athletic flooring, indoor rubber track, locker rooms, operable partitions, kitchen facilities, and supporting community spaces.
Construction included complete site development with earthwork, landscaping, asphalt paving, fencing, and concrete, along with the precast structure, architectural finishes, elevators, fire protection, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems. Universal delivered the project below the established GMP, completing the new facility for approximately $135,000 less than the original project budget.

JOHNSON COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER
LOCATION: Lawrence, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: This project consisted of remodeling a three-story existing building and to construct a new building. The new building consisted of twenty detention cells, three courtrooms, a lobby, three story D.A.’s Office, Sheriffs Office, and administrative areas. This was a jail addition that was built onto the current facility and connected the old with the new.

ATCHISON COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER
LOCATION: Atchison, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: This Construction Management project included a 20,400 SF addition and a 5,250 SF renovation of the existing jail. The facility houses 72 inmates in four classifications utilizing an indirect supervision inmate management plan. The project also includes Detention Housing Support, Sheriff’s Department Offices, 911
Communication Center, and other support services.

WILSON COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER
LOCATION: Atchison, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: This project consisted of a new 31,000 SF law enforcement center that provides 78 detention beds, an administration wing designed to handle 30 employees, and site
improvements made to allow for future jail enhancements and potential county industrial expansion on the adjacent properties. A 14 month construction project utilizing a considerable amount of local and smaller community contractors. UCC successfully implemented and carried out a program that guided and allowed the taxpayers to stay involved, while providing the expertise and security that the commissioners demand for their county.

JOHNSON COUNTY DETENTION CENTER
LOCATION: New Century, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: A 168,000 SF medium security facility and 40,000 SF Sheriffs office, located on a 100+ acre site, in two separate buildings. The project incorporated 264 beds and includes the detention facility for up to 264 inmates with the central plant, administration offices, kitchen, laundry, multi-purpose areas, intake and release areas, medical and psychiatry treatment, visitation and video arrangement designed to accommodate up to 528 inmates.

Johnson County Admin Building
LOCATION: Olathe, Kansas
DESCRIPTION: This new building was designed to incorporate many of the architectural features of the 1892 courthouse, which was demolished in 1952. It serves as the seat of the County Government, housing the Board of County Commissioners’ Offices and is the location for all BOCC meetings, as well
as most of the non-judicial public hearings.
