The Foundation
1887-1930
Our firm's roots date back to 1887 when Archie Smith founded A.W. Smith Masonry Construction in Kansas City. Before automobiles became common, brick, scaffolding, and construction materials were transported to jobsites by horse and wagon. One of the earliest stories passed down through our company is about a horse named Dick, pictured here in 1915, who helped haul equipment and materials from Kansas City to projects such as Fort Leavenworth. While the tools and technology have changed over the years, the hard work, craftsmanship, and commitment to quality established during those early days continue to guide Universal Construction today.
