Our History

The firm's roots date back to 1887 when Archie Smith began A.W. Smith Masonry Construction in Kansas City. Universal Construction Company, Inc. (UCC) was founded in 1931 when Archie and his son, Norvel E. Smith, formed a partnership, added Master Builder services, and changed the name to Universal Construction Company, Inc. Since 1931, UCC has provided services in 22 states and completed over a thousand projects totaling more than a billion dollars of construction value.
Today, the foundation, built by past generations, serves to give us a unique perspective of the present and future. Therefore, our services are constantly reviewed and refined by cutting-edge technologies and procedures designed to create efficiencies and to yield a superior project for our clients.

UCC had the distinct honor of receiving the U.S. Military "E" Award for our firm's service to our country during WWII. This included building three Air Force bases with housing for over a thousand men in a little over six months in 1942.
