Universal Construction and the Olathe School District have been working together since 1998. We have completed numerous projects totaling more than $135M in construction costs. This includes new elementary schools, middle schools, a new high school and 40 acre multiple sporting complex. Additionally, we have been involved in several addition and renovation projects.

Topeka Public Schools

Universal Construction was the firm of choice to assist the Topeka School District with a court mandated desegregation facility program. The roots of the court order actually dated back to the ground breaking "Brown vs. Board of Education" discussion. We were asked to manage the passage of a bond issue, design and construct three magnet elementary schools all within 24 months. The magnet themes included science, math and computer technology. This was one of the more challenging projects to date that we have encountered and are very pleased to say that the goals were met. The projects came in on time, within budget and met the requirements of the courts. At the last project update meeting when we turned over the closeout documents to the district, we were humbled by a standing ovation by the BOE and school administrative staff for a job well done.

The Lied Center and Organ Recital Hall - University of Kansas

This project consisted of a 127,000 sf performing arts center and adjoining 18,000 sf organ recital hall for the endowment department of the University of Kansas. The Lied Center Project was originally bid out to General Contractors, however, the project came in significantly over budget. Kansas University elected to negotiate a contract with Universal Construction Company (UCC) with the mission of value engineering the project without sacrificing the quality and overall design and to get the project back on schedule. UCC worked closely with the design team and university to meet the end users needs. We immediately began sitework and devised a way to cut out a 30 foot center section of the building to meet the budget whlie maintaining the performance criteria of the design. The end result is best summed up by the dean of arts own words, "The project has turned out to be an overwhelming success."

Lawrence Public Schools

Universal Construction was selected by the Lawrence School District to provide a full range of CM services to oversee a 5-year accelerated building program that included 22 projects over three bond issues totaling more than $78M in construction value. Projects included a new high school and elementary facilities as well as multiple additions and renovations to their existing facilities throughout the district.
